SABINE

“That . . . was excruciating.” Zehra blew out a breath. She stabbed the center of her plate, forking the last of her breakfast. The Master of Seers was blinded by her appetite. Drakkon snapped his fingers as he ignited it in flames. His sister spat and cursed across the table as her toast turned to ash mid-bite. Soot mixed with saliva foamed in her mouth.

The gold ring around his brown eyes melted with each futile attempt to calm himself, and the hand he used to ignite the fire formed into a fist, crashing on the table.

“Dammit Zehra,” Drakkon sneered. “How dare you.”

“Someone had to!” She coughed, scraping the napkin across her tongue for a second pass. “Do you think watching him suffer through an entire conversation like that is easy? As you flaunt it right in front of him. Even I have more compassion.”

A snarl ripped from his chest.

“Drakkon—” I attempted to stifle him, but it was too late. The dishes shattered to the floor as he snatched off the tablecloth and threw his chair backward. Kane sat silently, his head burrowed within his palms from the moment Keahi left.

“No—that is not what I am referring to.” He pointed at Zehra, narrowing his eyes. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

“Please. You’re being ridiculous.” She shrugged him off, throwing the napkin to the side. It floated over the broken pile Drakkon had made in the corner. “This booth is made of glass, so don’t try anything else unless you would like to end up on the streets.”

Drakkon spun back on his heel toward her, his attempt to distance himself lost to rage. I dug my fingertips into the back of his arm as he passed by me, halting him as he stalked toward Zehra. The heat radiating off him burned my hand. I hissed a breath, struggling to keep him beside me.

“Why is it that when something good happens to him . . . it’s always you who has to ruin it when it’s the least bit noticeable?” He broke my grasp, peeling away one finger at a time as he spoke. “Do you know how I know this? Because I can count them. What is it about his happiness that bothers you so damn much?”

“Drakkon, you need to take a step back,” I pleaded as Zehra’s face fell. “Please.”

If he kept going, the damage he could inflict in seconds would take years to heal.

My husband was not the only one who bore his pain in silence. Her brothers had not seen it as blatantly as I did. I knew the man who had held Zehra captive. The week Keahi had left, I saw how she’d changed. How every time a man looked in her direction, her fingernails dug into her skin. The urge to claw it off for their gaze alone became more substantial each time. Even from the men she trusted. Who wanted nothing from her. I feared asking more, because I knew just how violent my father could be against women.
